Organic Law 2/2010 of 3 March on sexual and reproductive health and the voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion law) recognises "the right to freely decided maternity, which implies, among other things, that women can make the initial decision about their pregnancy and that this decision, conscious and responsible, is respected". The law envisages leaving a period of 14 weeks in which women are guaranteed the possibility to make a free and informed decision on the termination of pregnancy without interference from third parties.

Instrumental (surgical) method

The technique used is Dilatation and Aspiration of the uterine cavity by means of plastic cannulas (Karman cannulas) using a vacuum system. The procedure lasts between 5 to 10 minutes and is usually performed under local anaesthesia and optionally under sedation. Intraoperative ultrasound monitoring is performed at the same time to verify the vacuum of the uterine cavity.

Recovery time after the operation varies from 30 to 60 minutes, and the stay in the clinic is approximately 2 hours.

On the patient's departure, she is given a discharge report, a prescription for medication and the rules to be followed in the postoperative period.

GINECENTER uses an IVE Protocol for the instrumental method following the recommendations of the World Health Organisation.

Compared to curettage, aspiration requires less dilatation of the cervix, blood loss is minimal and complications are very rare, which means that this procedure can usually be performed as outpatient surgery without hospitalisation.

Pharmacological method

It is a method based on the inhibitory effect of a drug (Mifepristone), also known as RU-486 or abortion pill, on progesterone, which is the hormone that protects pregnancy. It must be combined with a prostaglandin (Misoprostol) to expel the pregnancy and is administered up to week 9.

The use of Mifepristone with Misoprostol has been shown to be an effective, safe and acceptable method for first trimester abortions. Efficacy rates range from 95 to 98%, which means that 2 to 5% of women will need repeat medication or will require uterine aspiration (to evacuate persistent pregnancy or abortifacient debris or to control very heavy bleeding).

This medication must be administered in an authorised centre for the practice of abortion and in compliance with the requirements established by law (Organic Law 1/2023, of 28 February, which amends Organic Law 2/2010, of 3 March, on sexual and reproductive health and the voluntary termination of pregnancy).
